The Fall of Progressivism
by Terry M.
How many of you know people who claim they are not racist while
attacking the immigrants? How many of you know people who claim
slavery of blacks was bad but that child slave labor is
good? How many of you know gays who oppose choice or
support war? How many of you know pro-choice women who voted for
Bush? How about people who claim to care about the environment as
they cheer on the executions in the death chambers of the U.S.?
But are any of these individuals really progressives or are they just
giving progressives a bad name? Are they turning off Americans
who care to the movement and making them feel isolated?
The Democratic Party expects to win the elections in November. It
may. But following that, the party will come crashing down in
disaster. If you look at the people the party is running, you
know that not one of them will make an ounce of difference in the
things that matter in our government.
Though there are greats, like Dennis Kucinich, there are also those,
like Nancy Pelosi, who pay only lip service to caring about real
individuals living in America. When the Democratic Party had a
chance to pick new leaders who would bring it to greatness, what did it
do? Barbara Lee backed Jane Harman, a pro-war, anti-civil-liberty
hawk. And which representatives from California had the courage
to stand up and say "no" to Dianne Feinstein?
If you look at the worst of the past six years, the majority of
Democrats have gone along with most of it. You cannot put down
the Republicans without noticing that the watchdogs let in the burglars
and gave them a helping hand. If the Democratic leaders really
cared about making a difference, they would clean house and they would
start with Nancy Pelosi, whose leadership has gotten the Democrats to
support the worst of the Republican programs, from the worst attack on
American's rights to the most dangerous threat to California's
environment. While claiming to want to get us out of Iraq some
day, she is working hard to help Bush start another Middle-Eastern war.
In California, some kids worked to found a Progressive Caucus within
the Democratic Party. A small number of adults who wanted to
overturn elections and by-laws removed the youth from the caucus and
took it over, claiming to be anti-war while voting for war in their own
party's floor votes. The co-chairs of that caucus believe they
have the right to take the work of children, claim credit for it and
denigrate those whose labor they have stolen. But they are not
alone.
Back to Pelosi, whose daughter was appointed to chair the platform
committee of the California Democratic Party. Her committee has
no problems with the fact that almost 400 Americans have died in Iraq
without even one chance to vote for President. Her committee has
no problem with the use by the Party of child slave laborers. Her
committee strongly opposes freedom and rights for children. When
asked for rights for their labor, Pelosi presented the kids with the
Southern California Co-chair of the Progressive Caucus, who, while
representing herself as a pediatrician, claimed that those under the
age of 18 has smaller, inferior brains and deserved to be used without
rights. Only one person on her committee even thought that
America's youth had any social redeeming value.
So what happens when my generation grows up? Do the Pelosis think
we will forget and forgive and allow them to abuse another generation?
Do the Democrats who endorsed Harman expect the families of those who
die in Iraq to forget that they backed a hawk over the lives of those
who died?
What about the Democratic Party that forgot that it needed to treat the
candidates equally and only gave time and party funds to the hawks
while pretending that the Colleen Fernalds, Marci Winograds and Barbara
Becnels didn't exist? What about the pretend progressive
organization who failed to back those who opposed the regressives at
the top of the Democratic ticket?
Perhaps, its time for the Democratic Party to apologize to those it
claims to represent before its failure to stand up for the people
results in a continuation of the regime of war, terror and hate that
their past failures have created. It's time they stopped blaming
the Republicans for their losses and realized that they could win if
they only threw out the garbage.
