In March 1979, America found out what what the term "China
Syndrome" meant, thanks to Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas and
the producers at Three Mile Island.
From the
1979
trailer of
The
China Syndrome: "Today only a handful of people know what
it really means and they are scared.. Soon, you will know." And
they did, but they didn't need a movie to tell them. The Three
Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant almost went into meltdown,
contaminating large sections of Pennslyvania and causing serious
health problems for the people of that state.
Today, neither Pennslyvania nor the U.S. Government has learned.
Three Mile Island is still open and dangerous. It's not alone.
The
Northeast contains lots of Chernobyl-style nuclear reactors. Many
of them, particularly those in New York State, the second most
toxically-radioactive state in America, have leaked dangerous amounts
of radiation into the air and water supply. Swimmers in Lake
Ontario need to worry about the health effects of falling into that
lake or of eating or drinking anything made with water from Lake
Ontario. Some of America's worst leaking reactors are leaking
directly into it. New York has no qualms about putting the power
plants into the big cities. Check out the power plant in Yonkers.
More than half a million individuals (mainly children) died as a
result of 1986 the Chernobyl disaster. The Soviet Government kept
the
melt-down a
secret, resulting in observers of a parade in nearby Kiev to be be
"nuked." Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama
have openly supported nuclear power and are in tight with the
manufacturers of the next Chernobyl. Excellon is a top donor to
Barack
Obama and he has changed a nuclear waste bill to make it easier for
nuclear power plants to dump their waste on unsuspecting constituents
in
secret. Would Obama fail to notify Americans of a melt-down on
American soil?
The one official candidate who is disconnected from the nuclear
industry is Green Party nominee Cynthia McKinney. She has a
history of standing up for the environment, safe energy and
peace. Obama and McCain appear to believe that money and
publicity will outdo any interest in safety and peace. If the mass
media has its way, some voters will first learn that McKinney is
running
for President from looking at the ballot. Of course, with the
major party choices, many potential voters may stay home and never
learn what the mass media won't tell them.
