The National Rights Association of Orange County has called for an
evacuation of Orange County and portions of four other counties during
a likely release of high doses of radiation planned for September,
2009. Selecting the distance from Chernobyl to Kiev, the group
has called for evacuation of an 80 mile radius and for the closure of
schools within that radius or the relocation of classes to outside the
danger zone. Their resolution notes that the risk continues for a
200 mile radius.
The radiation exposure from the experimental procedure planned at the
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in the Fall, 2009 risks deaths,
cancers, and other major injuries. The youth are particularly
concerned about the ability of members of their own generation to have
children of their own.
Jeff, a youth rights activist from Corona Del Mar, stated, "It is
unconscionable that the Governor and Attorney General have not closed
down th is project or ordered the evacuation themselves."
Southern California Edison plans to cut open the radiation containment
dome to replace a failing generator. The plant was never expected
to operate past the death of the generator, but Southern California
Edison wants extend their profits from the plant and apparently is
willing to risk lives to do so.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the organization formed out of the
Atomic Energy Commission, which conducted radiation experiments on
unsuspecting Americans for decades, appears ready to allow Southern
California residents to be quietly nuked.
The NRC's response to Edison's falsification over a period of years of
safety records was to require that a training session. Many
Californians were surprised that jail sentences weren't the result of
that falsification.
San Onofre came close to a full meltdown in 2007 when wild fires almost
hit the plant while the safety backup system was shut down.
Steve, a youth rights activist from San Clemente, said, "Edison
officials could walk into n elementary school and shoot up the place
and the NRC would whitewash the incident on their behalf." Steve
isn't far off, according to researchers who have looked into the
situation. . There are elementary schools located close to the power
plant and the children inside could lose their lives or suffer serious
injuries during the experimental procedure if the area is not evacuated.
The NRC has steadfastly denied petitions to relocated children in the
event of major nuclear power plant catastrophes. Such an refusal
pits the NRC against the best interests of the public.
The National Youth Rights Association has also called on Attorney
General Jerry Brown to seek an injunction to stop the dangerous
procedure. Jerry Brown is running for Governor of
California. This will be a test of his willingness to put the
interests of the public above those of a profit making corporation with
big pockets.
