THE DPOC: THE NEW SNAKE OIL SALESMEN

For months, I've heard Democrats complaining about the DPOC (Democratic Party of Orange County) and how its main job seems to be to keep the Republican Party in power and keeping the Democratic Party out of power. They aren't even helping Lou Correa. Lou is a former assemblyman, a current county supervisor and a future state senator. In order to achieve his big victories, Lou has had to set up his own election support system.

The one candidate they are helping is Loretta Sanchez, a Congresswoman who seems to be doing more to sabotage other Orange County candidates than to support them. She has repeatedly scheduled fundraisers with various candidates and then canceled them with excuses like low planned attendance in order to make the candidates look bad. The word is that she is planning on running for governor in 2010 and feels the best way to achieve her goals is to be the only Democratic Representative in Orange County and to make sure Arnold remains governor of California through the 2010 election.

The Orange County Democratic candidates are scrambling to get elected. They have set up their own precinct teams with their own precinct captains without any help or support from the DPOC. They are doing their own mailings, their own walking, and their own phone banking   They are arranging for their own offices, fundraising for themselves and doing their best to defeat Republican candidates who have the full support of the Republican Party.

You have the former chairman of the DPOC openly backing a Republican candidates over a Democrat. It is not just a so-so Republican John Hanna keeps backing but an extremist who totally disregards the wishes of his constituents on a daily basis. Then you have the chairman of the DPOC defending Hanna for his endorsement of Royce and a bunch of groupies who want to be somebodies with Frank doing their best to destroy Ed Royce's opponent.

The DPOC chairman's job is to raise money for candidates. However, the bulk of the funds he's raising are going to a friend of his, Mike Levin. Candidate Florice Hoffman has been asked to pay for office space for her campaign. However, Chairman Frank Barbaro's friend Mike gets $70,000 for six months work, according to DPOC official members. The officers are supposed to serve as volunteers. Barbaro won't even give Democratic candidates a list their friends created of big donors in Orange County. The fact that candidates go unfunded and Frank's friend gets $70,000 for what DPOC officers should do for free is reminiscent of all the money-switching that reportedly goes on in the money-laundering schemes of the mob.

Close "Democratic" friends of Barbaro's have been backing and funding Republican candidates behind the scenes extensively over the past couple of years. To keep Barbaro in power, liberals are discouraged in heavy-handed ways from running for central committee and liberal organizations are being threatened into silence by Barbaro. At the DPOC's annual Truman dinner, a friend and supporter of Arnold Schwarzenegger was the keynote speaker. Barbaro is responsible for three Democratic vacancies on the November ballot in Orange County. The Democrats cannot win if they are not even on the ballot. Requests from Democrats around the county and state and a unanimous vote of the members of Barbaro's party central committee weren't enough to convince Barbaro to go for an order to put the three highest vote getters on the ballot in these three Orange County races. How obvious can Barbaro get? Truman would be ashamed. It was Truman who said that "Given a choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, the people will vote for the real Republican all the time."   The chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County should send Barbaro flowers and gifts to thank him for the good work Barbaro is doing for the Republican Party.

Now, if the DPOC is about get-rich-schemes and not about electing new candidates, then why should any Democrat in the county support it? It is because the public doesn't know. Conservative news sourses like the Orange County Register don't want to rock the boat. If a real central committee that backed Democratic candidates were in power, Democrats might get elected. Florice Hoffman, Steve Young, and Jim Brandt all have good chances of winning their respective Congressional elections. Frank Barbaro and his groupies are the biggest threat to a Democratic victory for Democratic candidates. It is also time for Frank and his groupies to stop talking out of both sides of their mouths. They pretend they are opposed to the Republican Party and they pretend they support Democrats but the proof is in what they do or don't do to get candidates elected. The candidates and the activists know the truth and the public needs to know it.

The Democrats can take over Orange County. To do so, they'll need to jump ship and select a new captain to run their party. The candidates and their friends can put together a people's Democratic Party without untrustworthy political bosses. If not, don't expect to see a lot of teens registering as Democrats when they turn 18. New voters are not going to fall for snake oil salesmen in Democrats clothing.
