Last night, Hoa Van Tran, the only Democrat running for the 1st
Supervisorial District, got a strong showing of support from Orange
County Democrats while the DPOC leadership suffered a resounding defeat
by
members of their own party.
In an attempt to drive a former DPOC employee out of the county, DPOC
leaders made two attempts at disendorsing the candidate who dared
to hire the DPOC employee under attack. The first attempt was at
a regular DPOC Central Committee meeting. That attempt
failed. So the DPOC leaders called a speical meeting on
minimal notice in the hopes that they would be successful with a
skeleton vote at the speical meeting. Democrats changed their
plan and some drifted between a liberal club meeting and the Kafkaesque
special session to make sure that the DPOC leaders did not sacrifice a
Democratic candidate for a personal vendetta against an employee they
had once promoted as trustworthy and capable.
Since endorsements require a super majority, Robert's Rules of Order
require a super majority to disendorse. Chairman Frank Barbaro
refused to follow Robert's Rules of Orders, as usual, and said he would
accept a
simple majority to disendorse. Barbaro and the vengeance-seeking
DPOC leaders still lost.
The meeting was full of personal attacks atainst those opposed to
destroying Democratic chances in the 1st Supervisorial District.
Chirs Prevatt, who previously worked to disenfranchise Democrats and
who is not a member of the DPOC, was allowed to attack opponents
of disendorsement. Prevatt and others resorted to calling those
opposed to disendorsement some pretty nasty names. One member
said he was afraid Prevatt would hit somebody.
When the vote came, it was 28 to 17 in favor of keeping the
endorsement.
Hoa Tran is supported by a great many well-mannered youth throughout
his districtt. The DPOC leadership has gone out of its way to
demonize the youth volunteering on Hoa Tran's campaign. The youth
working on the campaign are role models for other youth in the
Supervisorial District.
Hoa Tran will have a tough fight on Tuesday, June 3rd. This is
becase the leaders of his own party are working overtime to assist the
Republicans incumbent. Why? Should the FEC look into
whether the donations that come into the DPOC go to electing Democratic
candidates? Why are certain leaders walking away with such a
large share of the DPOC donation money?
