YOUTH
RIGHTS SUPPORTERS WIN BIG IN CALIFORNIA ELECTIONS
SPECIAL REPORT FROM THE
CREATIVE YOUTH NEWS TEAM
June 4, 2008
Last night, across California, youth rights supporters won big in their
elections. In addition to wins by supportive incumbents, like
Maxine Waters, Jackie Speier, Lori Saldana, and Karen Bass, State
Senator Mark Ridley Thomas proved he was the most popular candidate for
Los Angeles County Supervisor.
In Orange County, Steve Young, Christina Avalos, Tom Lash and Robert
Lauten won their primaries. Republican-supporting leaders
from
the Democratic Party of Orange County, tried to stop Christina Avalos
from making it to the general election, where she is expected to do
well against incumbent Republican Ed Royce. Avalos proved her
resilience and popularity by winnning a landslide victory in
her
primary.
The National Youth Rights Association of Orange County and the Patrick
Henry Democratic Club of America were part of a long list of her
endorsers, which includes elected Democrats, labor, senior,
environmental, youth, educational, immigrant, women's and civil rights
groups.
Avalos supports immediate withdrawal from Iraq, universal,
not-for-profit health care, lowering the voting age, abolition of the
death penalty, cancellation of NAFTA, withdrawal from the WTO, Social
Security protection, restoration of civil rights for all and rights for
workers, immigrants, and all Americans. She has a plan to end
the
gas crisis that the CY News Team has analysed. Team members
who
have looked at her plan say it makes sense and will work.
Proposition 98, which would have hurt renters, including students, went
down 39% to 51% while Proposition 99, which protected homeowners and
renters, passed 62.5% to 37.5%.
